I have tried an all male tank mixed with various aggressive CA cichlids and had pretty good success. Has anyone ever tried an all female aggressive tank (200+ gal), and if so what were the results? Which single sex tank works out better long term ?

I would imagine the females will still lay and protect their eggs with no males present. I'd stick with all males, they usually have a more dramatic appearance anyway. I have no direct experience with this, it just seems right.

All male tank is fairly common, both for CA/SA and African cichlids. By keeping out females, you also keep out aggression from breeding, because even peaceful cichlids get aggressive in breeding time. Keeping all females may not work to reduce aggression from breeding, because females can lay eggs by themselves or pair up with other females. I have never heard of two males pair up. Moreover, females are generally less colorful than males, so what's the point of keeping all female tank except for breeders.

ok...thank you for the replies, I didn't think about the females still laying even with no males present. I wouldn't agree all females are less colorful. I was thinking of a few Female Festae or RTM's
