hi i am thinking of setting up a very large tropical aquarium in my conservatory just wondering if anyone else has an aquarium in a conservatory and how does the summer/winter temperature affect things as i know they can get very hot in summer but also very cold in winter

any help greatly appriciated cheers andy

p.s. i am in the uk

There is a large aquarium in a glass dome conservatory at the botanical gardens in Brisbane - Australia. Actually its more of a concrete pond but since its build on a hill it has 2 levels with some glass viewing windows below and places you can sit beside the pond/tank above.

I would imagine some cold water fish species wouldnt mind how cold it gets as long as its deep enough not to totally freeze down to the botttom. Unsure about how aquatic plant species handle cold since I live in Australia but in summer the water would help internal temperatures stabilise since water acts like a heat sink/store. Might have a humidity problem and an algae problem but both can be controlled.

Hopefully someone more qualified will post too.

My parents have a conservatory. We could never keep anything in there, it would simply overheat, unless you have some kind of air con for the whole room, you wouldn't be able to do it. That is if it is a south facing conservatory, which i guess it is.

He he... noticed no replies from states yet. I think over here we call them greenhouses. It seems if you had a controlled environment you may be ok. With that much light you may have algae problems though.

My fishroom is in a Conservatory. Windows facing north and west. Nary a problem. No algaes.

In the summer heaters come off.

Actually more like a closed in back porch :D

All the conservatories around here are schools...:screwy:

if you do i would say fish that need high dissolved oxygen would be hard as the summer would be a nightmare keeping the temp down unless you get a chiller.

My advice-don't go there. I bought a 100G in Sept 2006-the winter was a nightmare trying to keep the tank warm enough (there was a small CH radiator in the conservatory as well); I got frequent outbreaks of Ich where I think the temp. kept fluctuating. I also taterted to get grief from the missus over energy bills too.We had to move it in April (2006) as not only was the temp. getting high but the actual water was beginning to turn green-you struggled to see from one end of the tank to another. God only knows how it would've been in the high point of Summer.
Its only my opinion but I just wouldn't advise it
