Size for Breeding

My female Con lost it's vibrant colors and I don't think it want to breed with the male. I was thinking of buying another female, but the guy at Petsmart told me that it was too small and then he told me to check it's mouth because they're mouth brooders So I was going to disregard everything he said and get the expert opinion of my fellow MFKers. What do you guys think...Male is 1" and female looks to be just under an 1"

mine bred at about that size....your probably already have eggs hidden in the tank somewhere. when mine had the first batch of fry i never saw eggs and i didn't see any the second time either. just be patient you'll have fry soon

that was a good first step

if your female had a lot of color and then suddenly lost it then there is a chance she may have already laid eggs. my female marbled con lost all the orange on her side after she spawned. it's been almost 2 weeks and she's still not showing any color.

as for how big they have to be, the smallest female con I ever had spawn was maybe 1.5" but I'm sure they can spawn a little smaller than that.

give it just a little more time, mine spawned at about that size (maybe a little bigger) good luck

Yeah...tell me about it. At first I thought this guy was a doosh bag, but he seemed to have some type of knowledge. And then he said that Cons are mouth brooder...so I took back what I thought about this guy...except for the doosh bag part.

they can spawn at 3/4'', so you should be fine.
i had 3 females, and gave 2 of them to a friend. it was around 1'', and he got a male also 1''. they laid eggs twice, but the first time, my friend took the eggs out before they were wigglers and they died.

Most fish don't breed till their 1 3rd the size of adults of their species.


Your cons won't lay eggs till their 1 1/2

When My pink cons spawned, male was 1" and fem was 3/4"... Yours should be ready.
Mouthbrooding cons? Come on...
