I would love to turn my 55 gallon community with a 15g sump and a mag 7 pump into a predator tank, i was wondering if this is enough for a bichir and maybe some other kind of medium size predator? any suggestions?

55 G tank, is perfect for life, for from 1-3 bichirs...lol. Though some peeps prefer them in 40 or 50 breeder tanks.

I keep a Black Ghost Knife in with my three Bichirs.

They are in a 55G tank, for now. I will be upgrading to the 125G tank, this month or next. Waiting on that good 'ol Stimulus check. :D

thanks alot! i mustve skipped right over that. i plan on a planted tank, which takes out a good number. i would love an african butterfly fish but for the life of me cant find any around here. i think i might get a shoal of clown loaches with him maybe.:headbang2

55g could work as long as it's at least 18" wide. But I agree with Moon, the wider the better :)

I found my Butterfly at Walmart:banher: but I'm sure you could ask around at different LFS and see if anyone can order them for you. I love mine! It's so much fun to watch him eat crickets and chase away other fish.
I'll have to warn you though. They aren't the most active fish and they stay at the top all the time. In fact, I don't know why I like mine... maybe it's because he's so ugly:ROFL:

50's are kind of shady because they are so narrow, a 40 breeder is much better.

you could keep some sens probably, and you could especially keep albino sens because they don't tend to get as big. That is the only species I would keep in the 50 (which are i think 12 inches in width?)

other preds that could work are ctenopoma (commonly called spotted leaf fish at lfs's), african knifefish, african butterfly fish, and others.

Pick up a 50 breeder.. I use to keep my bichirs in one, 48x18x13.. they do not need much height so it fits the smaller species perfect.
