I hear people talk about having multiple number of power/canister filters in their tanks to help with water clarity. I am running a 55 gal. and am looking at getting a xp2 filter. Would it be worthwhile for me to upgrade to a bigger filter meant for a bigger tank, or would it just be a waste of money? I guess what i am trying to ask would a xp2 + power filter or a bigger canister alone be better for overall water clarity and health?

I think for water quality it depends a lot on your filter media... you can have a very powerful cannister but lousy media, the water will also be poor in quality. For clarity get water polishers... difficult to maintain but crystal clear water.

i agree w/ sohfatfish, bigger filters dont clean the water its the media, the one good thing about having multiple filters is that you have more filter media options - i would go with the larger canister filter for better filtration plus if you upgrade tanks youll already have a filter to handle the job and not a under powered filter

I deffanetly agree with the post's above ... on my smaller tank's (20gal L ,25gal T) I have multiple filter's 3 to 4 totaling 60gal's of filtration on both tank's but I'm not useing what was supplyed with the filter's (whisper's) carbon bag and boifoam , I'm useing fluval ceramic ring's , crushed flower pot's , and micron filter pad's . I've had this set up for 6month's the water is allway's clear and ammonia is a zero nitrate is at zero & ph is stable ... the fish are brighter in color , and growing like wild fire ,and even managed to have a managuense spawn with a convict ( not a planed spawning)... MEDIA is the key to a healthy happy aquarium..... also I have no carbon in my filter's

I agree with everyone...but, to each his own....I run 3 canister filters on my 92 corner, and my 125....I also have an aray of filter media, I have crystal clear water. On my 55 I have a H.O.B filter, and a canister filter. I use ceramic cylinders, filter pads, and I also have water polishing media in 3 of the filters and I use a synthetic carbon....My 90 gal I run a canister and a H.O.B filter. I also have power heads in each of my tanks to keep the water moving around.

YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MUCH FILTRATION! THE MORE THE BETTER!!!

Jen ;)

on my 55 i'm currently running 2 ac70's which work great but i dont have a heavily stocked tank though....for a 55 i would recommend getting 2 ac110 you can prolly get them for the same price as a xp2 from bigalsonline.com......and they have a great space for media

I also I'am beginning to put a mix of seachem hyper sorb & renewl 4L mix..and hell yeah two ac110's on a 55gal is the way , myself (some my knock them but have'nt had a problem) I use two fluval 404 on the 55gal with a now 10'' oscar (only fish in tank) and the water is great ,he's fat as can be and happy. the only real problem is colleting the McDanold's french frie sized turd's up out the tank.. :yuck:

Ive almost always doubled up on fliters or gotten one rated for close to double the tank size.
