i got a male salvini(5") who is 3rd on the pecking order behind my dempsey(6") and severum(5").my question is how big does he need to get till he starts defending himself more. i no the males get aggressive and i would love 2 see him stand up for himself.

You can't just pick a size and say he'll start defending himself when he reaches it. He may or may not ever defend himself.
Your sal is already at maturity and should be aggressive by now. Trust me you want that with having servs as tank mates. A mature male salvini would normally kill wimpy servs in a heart beat. Maybe when he gets about 8'' he will stand up to them.
thx guys i figured u couldnt just pick an inch size and he'd turn into a monster. its jus he use to be a lil badass and now hes not, and ive taken fish out to make more room for everyone. and actually the sev harrasses my fish. he even tried going after my dempsey one time but she put the sev back in his place. the sev has red eyes and anyfish ive had over the years w/ red eyes have been mean SOB's lol
My 4" male salvini in my avatar terrorized 2 severums that were much bigger than him... I gave em away not too long ago for that reason, along with his smaller sibling. After they were gone he was very stressed (I had to net all of the fish out of the tank) and started getting bullied by a smaller female Blue Acara... he's still not as aggressive or colorful as he was before but he's getting better every day... my plan is to breed him with that small female next to him in the picture but she's still not mature.
I'm sure your salvini will rule that tank once he grows a little more, just give him a couple months.
