Sketch up sump design(What you think?)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
your design is very similar to my own ideas except i cant afford to use a tank so ill be using 1 of those big plastic drums with rope handles and a modified plastic drawer cabinet. I was thinking of growing a moss or non rooting plant in the bottom .

Looks good to me.

For plants I would suggest water lettuce, salvinia(sp?), and duckweed floating in the top with java fern, anubias, and java moss anchored to some rocks underneath. The top plants grow pretty quickly without CO2 injection and are easy to trim (just scoop any excess out). The lower plants are low light slower growing plants that won't require too much attention.

Just curious, what plants are you intending to grow in the sump?

I still want to do a bit more research myself on plants that use up nitrates the fastest. So far I like miguels idea with plants rooted in the sump but still growing out of the sump.Fast growing plants aswell.
See link as it is where I got my inspiration.http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?p=871779#post871779

Thankyou for your info.:)

I like it,looks good.

The one thing I can say,if you plan to build this yourself.
With pieces of glass/acrylic that are about 1" apart,it will be difficult to assemble cleanly.

That is if you are using an existing tank,glass/acylic box.
If not and you are starting from scratch,it maybe alittle easier.

Goodluck with the project, pics of assembly are a must.

Two things I would do differently. First is place your heaters where you have the two socks. Secondly, if you are planning to do a mechanical filter above your bio media you wont need the socks. If the socks clog and prevent water from passing through them you will have some potential problems. And the reason I say to move the heaters is that, that chamber should be the only one full to the top. Anything past your bio chamber should only be 1/3 full.

You have a point with the heaters but I was thinking of them being on thier side.As for not needing the socks.I included the mechanical filter incase the socks do clog up.What probs do you see if this happens? If the socks fill up,the water will overflow towards the mechanical filter and not out of the sump.Hence both socks and filter. Will always be filtered.

One of the fastest floating plants ive had is Water Hyacinth. This stuff grows like a weed and develops massive root systems.
