Hey, I'm starting up a 200-250 gallon reef (fish, corals, inverts), and I need a good protine skimmer for it. everyone says coral life is good, but they dont have one for that size tank (it will also have around 150gal more with fuge and sump, so water total around 350-400gal).

Anyone have any experience or recomendations for a quality skimmer for a tank this size?

Wile I'm at it, what powerheads have people had good experince with, I have herd good things about Hydor Koralia and Tunez, Tunez being more expencive, but is Tunez actualy worth the extra money? Also I know I can get one that would have enough flow but would it be better to get 2 or 3 to get a more spread out flow? Tank will be around 3' deep x 4' wide x 3' high.

I've got a Warner Marine as300 on my 375 and love it. As far as powerheads, I'm using two Koralia 4's and two Koralia 8's and they're working well for me.

ASM is the best protein skimmer next to RK2.

ASM are easy to clean, work extremely well and are priced incredibly lower then you would expect for a high quality skimmer. Tunze is a great company for powerheads a bit pricey but worth it. Hydor's are nice I use them as well no complaints either just wouldn't waste my time with them on a 300 gallon plus unless it was the new one's that hook up to a wave maker box.

for the best flow in a reef tank which I would do instead of either powerheads is the this here; 2 of them and your set.

the protein skimmer is here I imagine you would prefer the sump style version;

and replacement parts are so easy to find for the ASM but don't really wear out as much as other brands seem too.

ASM skimmers are good skimmers on a budget, but they are far from the best. They are more of a low end model, but for their price they do a good job. Depend on your budget for a skimmer which in my opinion besides lighting is the most important part of a saltwater tank and you always want to invest in as good of a skimmer as you can afford. So not knowing your price range I will give you what I know are the top five skimmers on the market today. Hands down the best skimmer is made by Royal Exclusive and its called the Bubble king the build quality on this skimmer is the best I have ever seen. They all use red dragon pumps which are built to last and to my knowledge are the most energy efficient pump on the market today. These skimmers do yield a big price tag, and ask anyone that runs one that they are worth every penny. Second on my list is also made by Royal exclusive and is called the vertex alpha cone and unlike most skimmers the body of these skimmers are built in a cone shape to make them more efficient the build quality of these skimmers are equal to the bubble king and also use the same red dragon pump. These skimmers are a little more affordable then the bubble king and will give you the same great performance. Third for me would have to be Korallen Zucht, these skimmers also use a cone shaped body, and a aqua bee pump which a comparable to the red dragon. Again another high price tag but you get what you pay for. The rest of the top 5 for me is a toss up there are other great skimmers like Atb skimmers, deltec, ati skimmers, H&S skimmers, mrc skimmers, euro reef so for me the rest is a toss up. I can suggest something if i knew your price range.

As far as power heads don't even compare tunze to korila. I personally have used tunze for years and have not one complaint. They move a ton of water and are fully controllable and I love their wave boxes. I have no experience with Vortec pumps I only know what my friends have said about them and that they are great pumps and move a hell of alot of water. I have also heard that they aren't as reliable as they should be for the price of them.
