does anyone know if adding a skimmer would give a significant improvement to the filtration of a monster tank? i figured with the high waste that some of the larger fish produce?

Thanks,
B.W.

If you have a problem with garbage on the surface, by all means use one, but it's not necessary otherwise.

Fresh water doesn't have the surface tension need for the foam to stack up high enough to collect in the cup. If you do get foam then you have to much DOC in the system and you don't have enough machaanicle filtration. I am sure you could modify or build a skimmer to acheive the same effect but at best you would get intermitant results.

Ok blackwolfXKAV, are we talking skimmer or foam fractionator?

You got both answers :D .

Skimmer. I was just wondering what the best way to "over filter" (if such a thing exists) a tank...

it is always a very interesting question.

I tried googling 'over-filtering' an aquarium, and just as I thought...it doesn't exist!

If it's mechanical (garbage), power filters will do it quickly and a diatom filter will polish it off.

Biological will only grow to the size of the food supply.

Fluidized bed filters are fun too.
