I have my 45g setup as a FOWLR. It's been running now for about a month and a half. Currently there is an Ocellaris clown and a Damsel in there, as well as a large hermit. I don't plan on having any corals (my nano is going to be for that). Can I do without a skimmer?

No matter how big or small of a tank, and no matter what you keep in there, you don't ever NEED a skimmer. It just spreads out the tank maintenance intervals.

Your fish will most likely survive...but if I was going to put one kind of filtration on a saltwater tank...it would be a skimmer. Keeps you from getting a nasty coating on the top of your tank for one...and in my opinion is more important than just a simple filter, which isnt really necessary at all if you do frequent water changes and siphon your gravel. FOWLR tanks can do without skimmers, but if you start to stock it more heavily you may wish you had one.
