I got a Reef Octopus Xtreme 160 yesterday and have it all hooked up. I have a few questions though. First, I heard these have to "break-in" before it starts producing skimmate. How long is the break in? My model has the Gate valve, do I just set it at the max? Also as water comes out of the gate valve it hits water and is kinda loud. Is there way way to muffle that?

You should adjust the gate valve such that the water operting level in the skimmer is about halfway up the collection cups neck. A little lower if you want the skimmate to be dryer.
Break in period for my reef octo was non-existant. Started pulling out gunk immediately and didnt need to adjust it after my first pass.
CoralVue sells acceserious for your skimmer, one of them being something to silence the output on the skimmer. Its sort of similar to a durso. You can make your own, but keep in mind that your skimmer uses metric pvc sizes, so you will have to do some trimming to make it work. They have pictures posted on their website.

I've seen a few pics with people that have the PVC mod. I can't however find how to mod it. I'm not very "home improvement" savvy and would like an idea how how this is done. Any ideas???
