how do you folks skim the protein/gunk off the water surface when using a canister filter. I havnt pulled the trigger on an upgraded tank but want to make the oscar/poly tank as clean as possible till I do.

open to all ideas, diy and store bought. thanks

Most canisters have surface skimmer intake attachments avail. Not sure what can. You have but they may make one. I usually run a hang on back along with my canisters just for surface agitation

You could run the inlet in an overflow box maybe?

Eheim make a dedicated surface skimmer. I have one on my discus tank which uses canister filters and think it's excellent. The tank size rating is low, I can't remember what size exactly, but my tank is a lot bigger than the rating, the unit runs on its slowest setting to avoid bubbles and it keeps the surface clear all of the time

thanks for the link . looked it up. I think I'm gonna try Tom's surface skimmer. one less power cord hanging on my tank. I'll report back on how well it works

just got in my "Tom's aquarium skimmer". right off the bat it seems like it will work as designated quality seems good for a $11.

I just use an internal filter stuffed with filter floss, then turn it upside down so that the intake holes are at the surface. Works well for me :)
