Hi
First post on MFK
Anyway one of my Females appears to have had her skin burnt, but i dont have a heater in the tank. She seems to be fine and eating ok.
First question is will this be fatal? I've started melafix treatment and also removed a flagtail that was feasting on the flesh.
Also my new male which went in the tank on Sunday seems to have something hanging off his back, never seem this before.
Any help gratefuly appreciated

Watch the ray closely, the Mela may make it uncomfortable. There has been cases where it seems to irritate the wound.

I'd salt, bump up the temp a bit and keep the water pristine and you should see lots of improvement over the next few days.

Second pic confuses me.....

^^^Bump up the temp and add salt, works wonder! I too would like to know what the second picture is, as I experience this with my rays whenever I do around 50%+ WC on their tanks, but all my other fish are fine except the rays which would look like what is pictured above.

It could be their slime coat but I don't really know as whenever it happens they still are active but that just happens...

OK thanks.
I have never used salt before so what type should i get, if there are different types that is, what is the ratio for adding? and what about temp? dont want to boil the wee buggers.

Check the KISS thread for salt instructions.

I would go with a pound/100 gallons.

Koshar salt is fine. Make sure to dissolve in seperate container then add to tank.

Temp... 82. make sure there's planty of air in the tank. If average add a few extra airstones to compensate for the temp.

you need to make sure your water is PERFECT. looks to me like poor water has had a bad affect on the rays.

step up the waterchanges, keep stress to an absolute minimum. so if they dont like the lights leave them off and dont do to much round the tank. if there feeding continue to do so but dont over feed. just feed them till there happy but non is left.

what else is in the tank? how big are the rays and the tank?
do you check your water and whats your WC timetable?

Checked the water this morning and all was good.
Just put the temp up, and there is plenty of airation, I reckon anyway.
So people would suggest staying away from Mela, i was only doing half dose anyway as I dont like using medication.
Will look into the salt tomorrow, in the meantime lights out.

Those wounds look very familiar.
A - A male has been courting her.
B - Another female has been fighting with her.

Find the culprit and seperate them while she heals or feed them ALL more often each day until she heals. This has been my approach numerous times with my stock.

The brown stringy stuff in picture two looks as though it is feces that just happened to catch her eye. Do you feed them nightcrawlers? The stringy brown stuff reminds me of "nightcrawler-ray-poop".

Just some thoughts.
Respectfully, FireMedic.

You have just suggested what I was thinking with regards to courting but I don't think they are old enough? Although very coincidentle that 2 days after male arives she has wounds on her disc.
Feces is poss, never had it before though. Feed all my fish prawns from Tesco (British supermarket) lol.
