I had what I believe is a Blue Tongue Skink (it looks similar to the ones we sell, color is different) dropped off at work today. No one was interested in taking it so I've taken it home because we had nothing else to do with it, our quarantine room is full.

I have a basic set up for it right now, but I wanted to make sure it was what I thought it was before I went into something more detailed for that species. I also wanted to know whether or not I should keep it long term or try and find it another suitable home... i.e. Are they good pets? Do they require difficult set-ups or care (the care sheets I looked at didn't seem like they'd be too difficult, but what do I know, they could be wrong, haha)? It's got a lot of damage to it's front feet (missing most of the toes), will this inhibit it or cause issues in the long run?

Just from what I've seen, I really kind of like it. It's active, it's not aggressive, it's really neat looking.

deff. a blue tongue. i would say keep it. awesome lil guys. everything you need to know is at bluetongueskinks.net

Yea its a bluey. Most blue tongues are missing some toes it wont affect them, it just comes from bad shedding. I would keep it because they are inexpensive to take care of and really neat little guys!

It looks like a northern blue tongued skink. Easy to care for, personable, laid back and just plain cool. You got a good lizard.

It makes snorting/huffing sounds, haha.... love it!

HPIZZLE, thanks for the site!

what he said, also I think its an indo like mine. mine being farm raised import it has always had shedding issues or sort of respiratory issues. Yours looks crazy healthy, if your not around to catch them after a shed and they are not humid enough, the toes will do that from stuck shed, its like rolling condoms off the toes, pain in the butt however its not every day they shed so its not too bad, plus they are fun lizards to deal with. We have been trying to figure out if the indos need more humidity than some say, mine does much better when its higher but my cage is huge and hard to maintain humidity, Im going to build a humid box in it. Mine to me is more of a rescue so I just give him the best life I can, try to always get CB. Northerns are the easiest but yours looks very good. That website is key.Now that I look at yours to mine I think mine could be a cross they have been running into because they had a hard time telling me for certain as well, your could even be a murauke or IJ hard to tell sometimes.I think they were thinking mine could be IJ, but I just dont think its a northern, most northerns I see are lighter, ask on BTS net.

Pic of mine.

I just freaked out thinkin I dropped my cigar someplace and ran around looking for smoke, it was on the kitchen in the ashtray, sheeesh. anyways:nilly:

if you give it a moist hide-box to go into for when it's shedding, you won't have a problem with the stuck sheds (a little late for that guy though). i use a plastic shoe box with an entrance/exit hole cut in the lid and filled with damp cypress mulch and sphagnum moss. i never had to peel the skin and mine has all its toes.

lots of other people have even with the humid box, seems some skinks just dont know how to get it off right. I agree though it is the best bet.

mine is deep and filled almost to the top. when it goes in there it digs down to the bottom to bury itself. i'm assuming the digging helps with the toe skin so i would suggest a deep box full of mulch.

I may construct something like that this weekend, my initial issue with humidity and the more tropical skinks is the respiratory issue though, but as far as the shedding I know what you mean.
