I understand that clown loaches are prone to the internal parasite that causes "skinny disease". I lost about 6 of them years back when I introduced a new clown loach into my tank. But my question is, can clown loaches all of a sudden, out of the blue, spontaneously contract this (i.e. if no new tank mates have been added). Some of my loaches are starting to look skinny, and my water parameters look good, they've been getting the same diet for 2 years now, in the same 125 gal that they've always been in.

Also, can fish other than loaches bring this parasite into the tank and affect only the loaches?

to my understanding feeders can bring in parasites and also all wild caught fish and plants have the risk of brining in bad stuff. one way i heard of killing the parasite is soaking the food in the stuff that kills parasites (sorry i cant remember the name) and feed it to them for 7 days i think.

Start treating with levamisole hydrochloride. I would suggest you ask your vet as soon as possible. Once it reaches to the stage that the skull is more pronounced, recovery is very dim so your option there is perform euthanasia.

In addition to Lupin's suggestion, I also recommend feeding a diet high in protein, like mussels and snails. I have seen many fish fill out solely with this method, although I can't say for sure if that was the only reason for the recovery. It's worth a shot.
