Hi all. I have a 6 foot tank, just over 150 gallons. Occupants are 1 7” EBJD, 1 3” Red Spotted Sev, 1 2” Chocolate Cichlid, 8 Clown Loaches and 8 Geo Red Head Tapajo’s. Water levels are Am 0, Nit 0, Nitrate 20+. 50% water changes every week.

2 months ago I bought a male 7” EBJD (as above). I have posted pics in another thread somewhere here.

My problem is this fish is extremely skittish/stupid. Last night I was about to feed the fish, lid still on the tank, and the EBJD was watching me, I opened the bag and the next thing I know the EBJD darted across the tank and ended up in the front corner, as soon as it did that, it darted across to the other side of the tank, dust/sand everywhere. I heard some clunks at the time and inspecting the EBJD after, it had marks on its body (where it had made contact with wood/ornaments). It sat in its cave and didn’t venture out the rest of the evening.

Sometimes ppl can walk past the tank and the EBJD darts off, smacking into things on its way. Or if I enter the room from a different door, again it darts off. This doesn’t happen all the time, so I was hoping it would just take some time to settle.

My question is, is there anything I can do to help its behaviour. I was thinking maybe a female JD would help him settle down? Or will his behaviour improve in a few months?

I really don’t want to rehome this fish, but I don’t like seeing him hurt himself. Any advice, suggestions are appreciated.

Usually timid fish just need time to get used to you. Spending more time in front of the tank usually helps. These fish seem to have issues as I have a new one of my own. ;)

mine was the same i bought it an oscar and now they swim around ever where the oscar was only 3" its nearly the same size as my ebjd and its 9"
