Hello all, I recently adopted a couple large pacu fish which are very skittish and dash about the tank splashing water about. This usually happens whenever I walk near the tank or turn the lights on/off. Any suggestions on how to calm them down?

the terms "couple pacu" and "tank" dont belong together. I honestly hope you either have a thousand gallon or larger tank, or are building a pond for them, and know the potential of these guys.

pacu are skittish fish by nature. while it will subside some, they will almost always be easily scared and will dart into anything and everything when they get startled. my biggest pacu had a really badly beaten face from doing that while he was in a glass tank. bad to the point that his teeth were actually exposed and partially broken.

i have the same problem and ive had mine for about a month now (i only have one large one) do pacu need places to hide like other fish? mine just sits near the mid level of the tank and sits there.

Yes i do have plans to move them into a my pond once they outgrow their current setup. These fish were resued from a 75g, my friend :)

red bellies are as skittish as pacus
so i dont see the point

Put some hiding place in the tank such as bog wood bigger then the fish so they can hide when they got disturbed. In my tank I have plenty.

My pacu have very vivid imaginations, and get spooked and go berserk trying to escape imagined predators. It takes slamming hard into a tank wall or lid to bring them back to reality. The tank is bare floored and undecorated, but my big boys manage to get scraped up on a regular basis by slamming into the lids of the tank. They have hit so hard, that tank water from the 1/2 inch gap around the lids has landed on the living room windows more than 6 feet away. We've had our rescued pacu four years now, and we know that they will never outgrow getting spooked/freaked out.

They feel more secure in larger numbers and with more but with pacu thats no good, so the best thing is to have some decor such as bogwood/mopani wood and plenty of plants (plastic, real would be food) around which helps make them feel more secure and safe.

Also characins have possibly the best hearing out of most groups of fish so they can feel vibrations and movement much easier do dont be loud or move fast near the tank. This theory is true as in our living room we have a couple of 5x2 tanks in alcoves and in the middle a wall mounted TV and in one its filled with metynnis and myleus and on the TV programme there was a loud explosion and all the dollars got spoked and went to one end of the tank and started banging about and nobody in the room had moved or anything
