ive had my 4 inch pearl for nearly a week now and its a bit skittish is this normal ?my water parameters are all fine he eats fine but sometime if i go to the tank he gets frightend and dashes in the tank
He either needs more time to feel comfortable in the tank or the tank is too small. I grew a 3" leichardti for a few months in a 55 gallon tank and he was not skittish at all. Once he hit around 7-8" he became very jumpy. Moved him to a 125 and then all was well.
Lei's are schizo, there's no two ways around it.Anyone with a lei thats not a tweak is lucky.
I am on my third one and one of them was somewhat okay but the other two have been completely ridiculous.I will not own another and kinda wish I would have just got a black this last time....at least then I would have some chance of mixing it with other aros.
Steve_89 also once explained how nutty his lei was when it was in a tank.
They will freak out if you make any quick movements near the tank, and eventually only you will have any chance of going near it without him flipping out, often to the point of bashing himself into anything he can find including, but not limited to, FX5 input and output, driftwood and rocks.
If you get too close to the tank, like leaning up against it messing with something on top of it or whatever,he will go nuckin futs, esp if for some reason if he sees your body and not your head..theres something about a torso that they just don't trust.
otherwise if your just sitting in front of the tank he might be okay but he will still probably only cruise a little bit and then go hide back up in the corner, repeating the process every once in awhile.
Only once you are at least 10 feet away from the tank will you see any sort of natural behavior from him like cruising around or tank mate interaction, but usually if he thinks your observing him he doesn't feel comfortable.
Often the only way to catch my lei cruising around the tank like normal is if I sit on the stairs and look through the banister down across the living room.
oh,and they will suddenly be just fine when they think you have food.
yup jars are skittish
mine took nearly a month before i could take a decent snap
now he does come near the opening of the tank for feeding time but if i make any sudden movements he still dashes to the other corner of the tank
are we talking about jars or leis here?
I've only ever heard of lei's called pearl aros.
If your talking about jars then the ones who said it needs more time are right, if your talking about a lei then it will only get worse with time.
i believe a "pearl" aro is a Jardini...when i first got my Jar he was 3" and he was extremely skittish. i would have to sneak up to the tank just to feed him without him freaking out! ...almost a year later at 8.5" he follows me around the tank begging for food. i can even tap the glass lightely with my fingers to get him to snap. its awesome!
IME: its normal for a juvenille Jar to act skittish. it'll go away with time. let him get used to you as the food source and he should come out of his shell
