I have a 30g tank with a pair of firemouths, 4 tiger barbs and 7 black skirts. This tank and occupants are a little over a year old. The tank is well filtered (Fluval 205), lit with 2 T5NO bulbs, and lightly planted (2 java ferns and an anubias). There are 3 large rocks in the center, 2 propped on the 3rd to make 2 caves. I also have about 1/6 of the water surface covered in floating plants. It is kept at 78*F. They all get along fine. The larger (male) FM chases the female around every once in a while, but generally they hang out in their separate caves. Neither pay any attention to the tigers or black skirts.

The problem is that the entire tank is and always has been terrified of me. Any time I walk into the room, the FMs fly to their caves and the skirts/tigers freeze up at the bottom of the tank. They remain hidden/frozen unless I leave or turn all the room lights off and they can't see me. Once I'm "gone," the tigers/skirts school around together, and the FMs sniff around, exploring the tank. I spend a lot of time in the room, so there's no reason they shouldn't be accustomed to me after a whole year. I can't even feed them while I'm in the room. I've tried not feeding for a day or two, but even then they refuse to surface for food. I've tried many types of food, including aqueon, hikari gold, NLS, even raw tilapia. Nothing can convince them.

Like I said, the tank is over a year old, has what I would consider adequate cover/hiding places, clean water, never any sickness except for a very recent round of ich that was heat treated with no losses. This extreme nervousness around people is not new, it's been so from the beginning. I cannot figure out what is stressing them so badly, or wont let them move freely about the tank when someone is in the room, even when trying to feed. Any thoughts/experiences with the situation? Sorry about the long read.

Are you doing 50% water changes weekly? With that stock in a 30g , you probably should, regardless of filtration. Are you using liquid test kit to check your parameters? What are the readings of your test kit?

I had firemouths I got as fry and within a year they were over 6". If yours are smaller than that, they arent reaching average potential.

Regardless of what they look like to you, they are more than likely not in the best of health from stress and water quality. The tank sounds tight and cramped to me, which isnt a good thing for the fish.

If none of the above is the culprit, id check the electrical current in the tank, could be a faulty heater or filter.

Yes I am doing 50% and higher water changes weekly. I don't have any test equipment, haven't bought any since the tank became cycled, sorry. The male is right around 6," the female is about 1-1.5" shorter. The tank was originally the 2 FMs and 4 tiger barbs. The black skirts were given to me, but I could move them to another tank. Can't move the tigers, they'd be to nippy for my other tanks.

You said that when you walk into the room they scatter. Does that mean that the tank is in a room that has very little traffic? If so, I would venture to say that is the majority of your problem. I f the fish arent use to seeing these moving giants, than of course they are going to hide. Plus everything VRWC said is spot on. If they are not comfortable than they will be skittish.

You sound like you have it under control as far as maintenance goes, so Id guess either something in the environment (electrical current/light/high traffic/loud noises/something chemical maybe in the air?).

And madness brings up a good point. If its in a low traffic area, they arent used to people. Mybe move them to a higher traffic area or leave a tv on in the room near them to give them time to get used to movement constantly.

It's in a bedroom/office (small apartments require room multitasking...). I probably spend 4+ hours a day actively moving about, as well as sleeping there.

Well thanks for the help. It's pretty much the same explanations I've researched, though hopefully one of them is the right one and I haven't explored it far enough, I'll just have to keep trying. I love my firemouths, they're the first big-kid fish I got when I moved into the new apartment a year ago. They're an underrated fish and my male has amazing coloration, and when they can't see me, they seem very happy (maybe I'm ugly). Just disappointing that they get so nervous around people, whether it's me feeding or showing them off to friends.

I scored an old 75g saltwater tank and cabinet (for free!!) and it's waiting to be resealed and the bulkheads need to be replaced badly, but that's an expensive and time consuming project. But one I looked forward to, for my fishies sake!

On a happier note, my driftwood finally stopped leaking tannins tonight after a month of soaking. maybe some new cover and hiding spots will ease the fish.

Resealing a tank is not that costly. 7-10 dollars for aquarium safe silicone, a caulking gun and a razor blade are all you need and it's more time than cost.

As for the behavior, some fish are scared by certain color clothing. Mine freak at white and red and all it takes it to spook one and they all fly. It could be any thing though. Good luck and your fish will LOVE more room. Mine didn't know what to do when they went from a 55 to 110 lol
