Hi,
First post here, but a long tmie lurker! im a student and work part time in my LFS, i try to give ot the advice that 90% of lfs's dont about large oddball fish and i have come to a bit of an anomaly!
My boss bought in about 10 slant nosed gars (pike characins?) and assured me it was a dwarf vareity growing to roughly 6inches, now he's been in the trade a fair while longer than me and knows a considerable ammount about fish and fish keeping BUT i dont beleive him, i reckon we have about 10 slant nosed gars in our shop at about 4inches long and there gonna start getting big quickly. whats the chances of me being right and him looking daft?

cheers!

Pete

slant nosed gar (Ctenolucius hujeta) (pike characins) -Anne

well these slant nose gars are not even gars - as beblondie says above they are characins.

And they get nowhere near as big as a gar. the biggest I have seen is around 8 inches, some people have claimed to have grown to around 10.

So it's safe to assume they won't get past 10 inches in captivity.

Do you have any pictures?

sadly no, a google search for slant nose gar or pikle characins turns up a pic quick enough.
thanks for the speedy reply guys. they havent changed size in the past few weeks despite rgular feedings on a variety of foods. so i guess they are sadly not the larger vareity i had ready about!
( i cannot remember the latin name but around 60cm, identical patterning to the hujeta characins)

at least 50/50 chance of you being right

There are a couple types of acestrorhynchus that are similar and stay small, one only about 4", but I have never seen them for sale.

here is a pic of a hujeta, commonly sold as slant nose gar.
