So I have a bunch of slate caves throughout my 45. I had tilted them up orginally, so they were ledges with 90% of the rock under sand, but the fish slowly turned them into caves. I completely forgot their digging would change how the sand supported the caves over time. Thus, it happened over the holidays while I was too busy to notice. One thing led to another and all the squished fish destroyed my water quality and that killed my other fish. Now I'm left here feeling like an idiot.

Moral of the story: Don't forget to reenforce caves your fish dig under slate.

:duh:

Sorry for your loss. Here is some tips for other folks :)
* Place rocks or wood and lay it out in your tank first and organize them.
* If you can get your hand on aquarium silicon then glue it so it won't move anywhere (good for Californian or somewhere has change to have earthquake (well a major earthquake will destroy everything but in case some small one happen most of the time in California your aquarium will decor will stay intact))
* Put your substrate in and plant your live plants if you have or want a planted tank then slowly fill up your aquarium.
* Last is enjoy your creation :) /cheer.
