Can natural slate tile be used to cover the bottom of my aquarium without messing up the water parameters? Would this affect my flowerhorn in any way? My brother-in-law is a flooring installer and can cut the tiles to fit perfectly inside the tank. I think this would be a good way to add some color to the tank as well as keeping it easy to clean (My tank is currently bare bottom). Would they need to be silicone in?

People have been using slate in aquariums for lots of years. I don't see any problem in using it to cover the bottom of your tank. It should look really nice, but I would go with slate that doesn't have a uniform thickness so you can get more texture on the bottom of the tank.

If your got to cover the bottom with some kind of rock than slate is your rock! I've been using slate roofing tile for years. they are thinner at about 1/2"and lighter than hewn pieces 1" to 2" and they are relatively cheap. If you are careful with a masons hammer, they are also pretty easy to shape.
