So I've had my tank setup for about 10 weeks, and am having a problem getting it to cycle out, can someone please tell me with out flaming me what's going on... So I am starting to get nitrate reading but they are low, my nitrites are about 3ppm and my ammonia is quite low also. I am goin about doing water changes as I do a 25% just about every other day. Anyways this morning I notices some of the brown algae on the back glass, tested the water to find the nitrites between 3-5 so I went down to my lfs which is a good store with knoweledgabe employees, I am talking to the guy who works there and basically he told me I am cleaning to often and thats why it won't cycle out, he sold me some fritz zyme 7 and kordon AmQuel ammonia remover/water conditioner and told me to go home and do a small water change and vacume whatever is on top of the gravel but don't over do it. Said when I vacuum the water coming up from the gravel should be brown, and told me that I should cut back on my feedings every other day and only do water changes about once a month. So is this accurate? I was under the impression to do a water change atleast weekly. Is my cleaning and keeping the tank spotless what is keeping it from cycling? Any help would be great and please don't tell me to go look up the nitrogen cycle because I know it and that is why I am confused. And I'd it makes any difference it's a 40 gallon, fluval 306, AC 50. With a few live plants.

Well, the sand and gravel bed is where most bacteria colonize. The good bacteria. By vacuuming an cleaning so much you are not allowing the bacteria to establish itself enough, hence it's not there to eat waste and your tank won't complete it's cycle. Stick to weekly water changes.

How does a bare bottom tank cycle with no gravel then?

So that's what I'm saying, in the 10 weeks wouldn't my filters have a sufficient build up?

What media are you running in your filters? and BB colonizes in many places.. but your water is not one of them... sand/gravel/bare bottom doesn't matter either if you have sufficent filtration media. btw the lfs made money off you... regular water conditioner is all you need... what is your stock list? and have you cleaned the filters since it's been set-up and if so how do you do it?

Yes and no. Your filter would have bb however if you don't have enough media in your filter you will always have problems. I use a fx5 with close to a gallon of ceramic bio-rings and scrubbies. I also use a mag 350 without the filter or carbon container (only has scrubbies and ring in it) to enhance the bio-filter.

My stock list consists of 3 fish, 2 flower horns that are quite small, one is 3 inches and the other about a inch and a half, also a JD that is about 2 1/2 inches, my jd is going into another tank in the next few days. I have the foam, ammonia remover bags and the bio bag in the AC, in the fluval I have the foam, carbon, and bio beads. They have not been cleaned, all I did was switch the carbon with the ammonia remover in the AC.
