hi i'm the proud owner of a asian arowana. i just finished reading "tanning regime" by kagemaru and he/she mentioned "loss of slim coat".
how do you tell if your fish is losing it's slim coat?

air bubbles being trapped on the body or scales of the fish. Almost looks like flakes on their scales. Or just sneak a feel. If you own an aro i know everyone has touched them. They are usually very calm about being touched.

you cant, the slim coat is thin layer of clear mucus that cover the fishes body, the only way you can know for sure is if you pysically handle or make contact with the fish. if your water is good and the fish is healthy IT'S THERE, no need to touch it at all.

i dont like tanning anyways, take the fish for what it is, id rather you help its colors nutritionally

i've only owned it for about a month ..... as for touching it, i'll give it a try
Just remember to wash and rinse your hands completly and a squeeze of something like stresscoat on them (your hands) can't hurt either...I do it all the time with no adverse side effects...
Here is what one gentleman did to promote tanning with natrual sunlight...

With a slight dose of salt and aloe vera juice in the tank should help.
