Ok, I've heard about plecos, Siamese algae eaters, otos, and other "sucker cats" getting hooked on fish slime, but corys?!

My sister swears one of her cory cats is sucking on her rainbow fish. She said she has seen it happen.

Is this weird or what! Anyone else have this happen?

my clown loaches ate on the side of my red hump geo who wound up dead.I just posted this in another thread-lol-but I cant exactly say for sure if the fish was already on its way out or if the loaches killed it

no. Corydoras dont have suckermouths. loaches dont either, but their mouths are closer that Corydoras'

See, that was my reaction; cory's mouths just aren't designed to suck.

What worries me is that my sister said the rainbows have red marks on their sides from the "sucking", like hickeys I guess. Since sucking corys have been ruled out I'm afraid it may be a disease.

Ok let me help clear this up a little. Sis it was the angel the cory "sucked" on and it wasn't really sucking, it was like it just went up and ran into the side of the angel with it's mouth but it didn't stay there or latch on or anything. Sorry for a poor explanation I guess. The cory only did it once and never did it again after that. So no probs there. As we know now, the problem with the rainbows was ich. Nasty nasty ich. I hate ich. Thanks for the diagnosis on that one sis. They're still covered in those damm salt lookin spots and I'm hopin this goes away sooner then later before I lose more fish. Fish lost so far, 2 rainbow boesmans, 2 corys, and not a single damm bloodfin tetra has died or looks sick as of yet. One of the Corys that died looked like something inside it blew up cause it's stomach was all red lookin. Don't know if the heat was too much for it at 82 degrees or if it just had it's heart blow up from stress. Any hints? Is it possible that even though my snails can't get ich they might have transferred it to my 35 hex? I had some of the little black pond snails from the little tank in a seperate container for like 2 weeks and noticed a bunch of white crap in the bottom of the container and the snails were all balled up in a little ball and looked nasty but I stirred it up and they looked fine so I threw them in the 35. Gonna try usin the gravel vac every other day until this gets better and keepin the temp up and salt in the water.

Red marks? This only makes me guess this is hemorrhagic septicemia that her rainbows are suffering from. It is IMO coincidental that the cories appear to be "sucking" when the rainbows may have already suffered bacterial infection. Could you please test water parameters and post the results? Maintenance routine? Foods? Tank size and tankmates (what was left)? Filtration? Temperature?

As far as snails carrying ich, for future reference, they cannot contract ich but it is possible they may carry the cysts that may have attached themselves on the shells of the snails. The white stuff are not ich. You cannot see ich with your naked eyes.

Add on: What salt are you using? How much salt did you dose? Did you dissolve the salt thoroughly and add slowly? Salt grains if not dissolved can cause burns on the skin of the bottom dwellers particularly catfish. It could be that or hemorrhagic septicemia associated with ich.

Too many edits as my head is a little burned out.:wall:
