Are there any slow growing cichlids? My understanding is that there all fast growing. I know frontosa from Lake Tanganyika are some what slow growing. At some point I would like to house some cichlids with my datnoids but I think they will out grow them too quickly and eat/bully them. My dats are in the 2-2.5" range currently. Thanks

Jd and gt are the only very slow growing im familiar with, ive even had festae grow from 2 to 10 inch in 7 months. ..

Sure - plenty - Or, you can stick with smaller-growing Cichlids.

It all depends on what you are interested in - Africans? South Americans? Central Americans?

Just to start, on slow growers:

Uaru, Green Terror, Festae, Geophagus (all, I think), Chromides, many Africans, etc etc - Many of the CENTRAL Americans grow fast, and while the others tend to grow slower, with a few exceptions (Oscar, etc.)

Or - simply get Cichlids that are not going to focus on eating other fish (herbivores, detrivores, etc.)

The Uaru interest me. I know they eat veggies and are similar to discus and also get a decent size. I would imagine those would do great with datnoids.

IME JDs grow very fast at least regular JDs. Also from what I understand you are supposed to avoid aggressive cichlids w/ dats.

Ive kept uaru and geos of many kinds.... IME ive have nickel sized uaru grow to 6 inches in 4 months. My Geophagus altifron from 1.5inch to 6-7 in the same time. Red headed geos from 1" to 5 in the same time frame. Regular wcs on a 180 gallon and fed good food. I dont to consider them slow growing. That was my initual thought. I bought 15 geos thinking i had time to grow them... i was wrong, i had to rehome them...
