for the guys with the B I G cats..

I've had my tsn for say a year (I will hunt down the thread I created the day I got him later) and I was VERY hesitant to get him from the start.. I saw all those threads when they had reached 30 feet in 2 weeks and now needed a small lake and I don't BUY if I can't house for life..

I rescued him at maybe 10" a year ago and he is at an absolute max 20" now.. don't get me wrong, I'm super pleased he didn't spike off to 30"+ in no time.. if he continues like this or even better slows down I can keep him for life and that would be fantastic. he is on a diet of shrimp, fish filet, hikari cichlid gold/staple/sinking and gets fed everyday. not a big feeding but he snatches a few pellets from the ray/clown loaches.. he gets a serious feeding once a week or so. I fed him pretty heavily (every other day) until he reached 14-15".. I guess he could be stunted from the previous owner but what am I to expect? is this normal or what.

I will upload pics in a sec.

good call there mate.. unfortunately that is not it :)

10-12-2008 is the date of the first 2 pics..

and last pic is from last week..

Spotted shovelnose catfish, which are fairly rare (I think - I can't find any, anyway) are the smaller ones. Lima's are also smaller and more common.

That's definitely a TSN though. Its hard to say if its stunted, but if he grew 10" in a year, I'd say he's probably fine. I got mine in August and he looks so much bigger than when I got him, but when I actually hold a measuring tape up to the glass, it looks like he's only grown 1.5-2" - so like an inch a month, which is about on board with yours. The more you feed, the more they grow. If you watch their feeding, they won't grow as fast. I usually give mine a fat belly every other day. Once he moves up to the 450g, he'll be powerfed again for awhile.

so, what do we think?

idk if yours is stunted or not, but my three have gone from 4" to 10-12" in a few months...i noticed that mine grew faster at higher temps and slower at lower temps...high is 86f and low is 79-80f...

TSN are slow growers after the 18'' mark IMO.

know 2 fish are the same i got 2 rtc the same size on the same day. but one is about 4" bigger then the other. there may be a time when it has a growth spert and then slows back down

mm, I keep pretty high temps.. 27-28C think that is about 85F?

probably nothing wrong with him and if he is a little stunted I'd just embrace it but when you see those real monster tsn' (not coruscans sp?) I just thought I'd be in over my head sooner than this.. well well.. just throwing it out there..
