Hey guys I bought a 3.5 inch male motoro pup about 3 months ago, and I have been feeding it nightcrawlers and market shrimp. It hasn't seemed to grow at all. Am I doing something wrong? Has anyone else encountered this. He is in a 125 growout.

did you try to de-worm him? on many occasions Ray's are not properly cared for prior to purchase. If his intestinal tract is infected with parasites they will literally suck most if not all the nutritional value from him and his diet. You can usually identify an infected fish by looking at its poop. If the poop is light in color and stringy then its a good sign that your fish may be infected. If you have not de-wormed I would recommend a treatment with Prazipro by Hikari. It seems to be very effective for eliminating parasites in rays. One dosage lasts about 5-7 days and will usually do the trick.

A small male motoro that is being well feed and kept in good water conditions should grow rapidly. What is your water change regime and what type of filtration are you running? What temp is your tank at? How often are you feeding the shrimp and worms?

A picture will also help.

pretty normal, for some male motoro's. Mine is about 4 years old and 11". Some will grow fast some slow, most males will not get as big as most females though.

I have also heard that too. I will get pics. I just fed him, and he stuffed himself on shrimp. His poop isnt stringy or clear. I feed him once a day on shrimp. Once in awhile i will throw in some nightcrawlers. I love this guy to death. Hopefully he will grow faster.:D

I actually doubt that it was WC. It was a pup. I bought it from a LFS, and it immediately ate frozen bw, market shrimp, and nightcrawlers. Aren't wild caught ones hard to get off of live?

Most rays only grow 1-4 inches a year most are closer to the 1-2 inch mark with an occasional growth spirt here and there

Oh ok thanks. I guess I was expecting a huge growth spurt. Thats fine though he may be a pup, but he eats like an adult :D I will get pics in a bit.

I agree with what John said, I know wild caught tend to grow slower but If you picked him up from a LFS at a few inch he may be captive breed. Its good to hear his waste looks good. I think you can increase your feeding, also what do you do in regards to water changes?
