Hi guys, I got myself a ~4.5" wild male umbee early March 2015. Since I've had this fish, it's only grown maybe 4-5 inches tops. Now from what I hear in regards to umbees, this growth seems to be exceptionally slow. He's extremely active, bangs glass constantly, eats like a pig and spawns with his female (who is similar in size) regularly. Water temp is kept from 80*-82* Any ideas what could be going on???

How often are you doing water changes, and what amount?
I have found if you do a water change 50% once per month, there is a certain growth rate.
If you do a change 80% amount once per week, fish grow much faster, or if you change 50% of water every other day, even exponentially faster.
Many discus breeders change 90% per day to get the best growth.

I don't think that growth is below normal. I think he is right on par. He has gone from 4 1/2 inches to 9 inches and I think that is good.

Imo 1/2in a month isn't bad. My umbee didn't grow extremely fast either but it was steady growth. Are you sure it's a male? Females grow a little slower ime.

He seems healthy and the fact their breeding means your water is good and everything seems fine. I wouldn't worry about growth just enjoy them! I love watching my fish grow.

Post some pictures of the progress.

I'm doing roughly 75% once every week with the odd missed water change...
Hes only really started showing his adult male coloration and attitude in the past 2 months or so... Maybe a late bloomer? Lol

Heres when i first got him last year

Unless you have extremely small hands he is about 7 inch in the first pic, an average palm is 4 inch!-)

Looks awesome btw, I find Dovii to grow slow for me and my umbee seem to be just as slow. I grew a male festae from 2 inch to 9 inch in 6 months too, all my other fish grow well too.. . Always seems to be the ones you want to grow fast that don't lol!-)

Maybe a stressed environment at some point has slowed his growth. Looks like healed battle scars on his side. I got a few umbee's two years ago and they were all at around 3". I raised the most aggressive one by himself and he is now right around 19 or 20", the other male grew up with multiple cichlids and I got rid of him 3 months at 14".
