I brought a black ghost knife home from the LFS 2 - 2.5 months ago at 3 inches, slightly underfed. He's now pushing 7.5 sightly chubby inches, snout to tail. For a fish that's reportedly slow growing, this seems a little crazy. I had anticipated maybe 1/2 inch a month, allowing for his age, but ~2"/month? :nilly:

I've heard that rapid growth like this is detrimental to the lifespan of the fish, so I was thinking of slowing him down a bit. Right now, he's getting frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, krill, tubifex, beefheart and whatever else I can get him to eat, rotated by day, fed once a day in the evenings. He's packing away about one cubes worth per feeding (what I try to limit him to at a minimum). Cube is approx. 1.5cm^3, and gone in under a minute.

Should I change the frequency and amount, or just the amount? Say, one cube spaced over 12 hours (2 feedings), or a half / 3/4 cube at the normal time? Maybe feed lees of one particular item? Not bother at all?

Suggestions appreciated.

I think you're feeding to much per serving.

A few thoughts..

BGK are probably not 'slow-growers', just people don't take very good care of them and they don't get the proper amounts of nutrition, giving them the 'effect' of being slow growers. (ie: clown loaches)

Most BGK's are in a competitive situation, it sounds like yours dosn't have this problem. Less stress, more nutrition, good water quality.. your on your way.

Also, most fish during their juvenile stage experience a 'growth spurt' and will eventually 'plateau' out in the growth process. I don't know how many fish I bought when they were tiny, only to watch them grow real fast for the first few months.. After that, the growth slowed significantly. It always seem to happen to me with the Ctenopoma. 1"-3" takes only a few months.. 3-6" takes forever it seems.

Hmm. Conflicting opinions?

I'm relieved to hear he's probably not out-pacing himself. Yay or nay on throttling back the feeding? He's got a good appetite...

V,
I have been told that fast growth means shorter life too. Unsure if thats true but if your knife is chubby then its over-eating. Is over-eating a bad thing? Great food variety though!

One of your daily feeds is what I feed my knifes` per week! They are adults though so dont need as much food to stay healthy.

Wow...that's a good growth spurt. Looks like you give it a good variety of food and probably keep up on regular water changes. Try feeding it one cube once a day. That might slow it down.

I think I'm being a little obtuse. He's getting just one cube a day right now in the evenings, and I'm rotating through the options of what he'll eat every day / every other day. Sorry for the confusion! Since he's not deathly obese, it sounds ok to stick with that ratio until he slows down a bit. Thanks for the input!

stick with it for now but once he get's about 8"-10" i would feed him every other day and see how he goes,if he looks really hungry and starts to lose weight then go back to every day

any pics.

WOW ... that joker is growing fast!

I have 2 BGK's one is about 6 inches and one is about 4 1/2 inch and combined they don't eat that much!

If they are eating that much ... my hunch is that the cubes are fed frozen - yes?

You might want to thaw it out and get it mixed in the current a bit so they can hunt for it more ...

It might help in the consumption rate...
