a friend of mine got a bichir at 4" about 6 months ago and is now only 6". he bought it as a Nigerian bichir (looks like senegal). he recently got an ornate that has already outgrown it. do senegals usually grow this slow?

switch to bichir forum under prehistoric fish silly

It will grow to about 7-8" in the first year and after that it is very slow. They top out at 10-12" and live 15+ years so it might take a while. Mine is 5 years old and only 8 or 9". And Nigerians are the same as senegals.

depends on what species of bichir you have but 2'' in 6 months is pretty slow for a bichir

if its a senegal then they should grow fast till they reach 8'' then they get fatter then they get longer and fatter at the same time if the bichir were over 8'' then that would be a normal growth rate but one so small should grow faster

just pack it with super high protien foods that are really rich in vitamins and stuff and make sure it has ample space to swim and it should grow pretty quickly

My ornate out grew my senegal. I was actually shocked at how fast the ornate grew compared to the senegal... my del also grew faster than my senegal.

Yeah my Sens grew so quick compared to my del. Who is slow growing. But I think in his case it is because when I got him he was starved. And I do mean STARVED! He is now filled out after almost 3 weeks, but hasn't gained an inch yet.
