You know those plastic canister type filters that come with WalMart swimming pools? They are lightweight plastic, and very powerful. I have two - and have used them on and off, but the problem is, the filter cartridge (not sure what to call it - it is white, with many, many "ribs") constantly clogs. Water no longer passes through. How can this be remedied? It is like the micro-holes have all been clogged, and washing them does not clear it up.

Are there good ways to adapt them for aquarium use? If you have done it, I'd like to know what you did.

Have you tried a pre-filter to take out the larger debris before the filter on the pool filter?

Since they are cheap you might try to test their durability. I have a magnum with a similar filter and I just dump it in a mild bleach solution and let it soak overnight to clean it. Rinse it off and and add dechlorinator to be on the safe side to the filter and I'm good to go again. If that material on those cheap filters is made of the same stuff there should be no reason to be able to use it over again. I have two for my magnum so I can switch over when it is needed. I usually soak mine longer than overnight though cause I use a mild bleach solution. Hope this can help!

Yes, I have used a pre-filter. It's just a matter of the "tiny" pores clogging up, and the water flow stops.

What is your "mild" bleach solution? 5 gallon bucket with how much bleach in it ? Yes, that "stuff" is the same as what you see in other "tube type" filters (like LifeGard)

Thanks!

I get a 2 liter bottle and just pour maybe 2 to 4 capfuls worth in it and fill it the rest of the way up with water. You can pour more if you want it to get clean quicker but I just let it set until the next one gets dirty. Rinse it off really good and add dechlorinator when to the filter before I turn it back on. I have never had a problem doing it like that.

Certain two facts on this post unequivocally the best we have all had.I'm totally agree with you. You'r 100% good here that if that material on those inexpensive filtration is created of the same things there should be no purpose to be able to use it over again.
I agreed what's said above!!!
