small cichlids

In a 12g tank, you'll basically be limited to Apistos and other dwarf cichlids. One that I particularly like is Laetacara "Buckelkopf."

Apistogramma borelli would be good too:

Or Dicrossus filamentosus:

Or just good old German blue rams:

You could easily keep a pair of any of these species in a 12g.

I would go with a blue ram, just keep up on the water quality, they stay small.

I would watch for aggression in a 12 gal with apistos....can be kinda nasty...same with Rams at times. I had 4 in a 20 gal and the males would duke it out. If you had a pair it might work. I would go with the checkerboards though, they stay smaller, are kewl lookin and interesting beyond compare!

A pair of any of the above species is what was suggested. Keeping multiple males of the same species would likely lead to some aggression. But a pair should be absolutely fine.
