Is their such thing as a clown knife type of fish that can go in a 55 gallon tank?

Only when very young, and they grow quickly. You'll need a /\/\onster tank for him fairly soon. If you can't get a larger setup, the African Brown is a great fish too.

African Brown Knife Fish (Xenomystus Nigri) will do fine in a 55g. They look pretty nice if you want something for a 55g.
