If I have a pair of Julidochromis in a 30 gallon tank, could I add a few more cichlids to it to make a small cichlid community? (I do know that Julie pairs can be aggressive. My question is whether certain species will tolerate that aggression given the tank dimensions.) These are the species I'm considering: Labidochromis caeruleus, Aulonocara firefish, Pseudotropheus sosolofi and shell-dwellers. I don't expect to add them all but I'd like the tank to have as much variety as possible. I'd even be willing to settle for one Julie if it allows me to keep more species. The tank dimensions are 36 x 12 x 18 inches. Thanks in advance!

I quoted the wrong aquarium dimensions by mistake. I'm considering a 24 x 12 x 24 tank for this. Or would the cichlids do better in the 36" long?

I would go with atleast a 36" tank. You'll have more floor space and could have your julis and a shell dweller species. Just divide the tank half rocks and half shell bed. I don't think I would attempt mixing any of the fish you mentioned with what you already have.

I would upgrade to a 55 gallon, 48"x12", something along those lines, to try keeping these fish together. Labs are not super aggressive but a 36" tank isn't much room to have a pair of cichlids and then a group of another species. The 24" tank would not be big enough for a group of labs alone imo.
If you can only swing a 36" 30g, I would say some shell dwellers would make good tankmates for the julies. Occelaris are great fish, or brevis. 30g is not really large enough for the other fish your interested in, in a community.

I'm having trouble selling an old 65 gallon tank (36 x 18 x 24) so I'm considering using it as a cichlid tank. Will I be able to keep some of the species I've listed above with a J. marlieri pair in a tank that size? Thanks again.
