Got a couple of potamotrygon cf. ocellata coming in from Jeff Raps this weekend. Gonna keep them in a little plastic tub or 20g for a couple of weeks while I set up their tank (have plenty of seasoned media to make it almost instantly cycled). These rays max out at 12'', and I'm planning on keeping them in a 60g frag (4'x2'x1') with probably about 40g of sump or so.

Can anybody recommend a small growing geo that would work in this footprint? My concern is the limitation of the 12'' height, being that geos are fairly tall fish.

I was also thinking about maybe putting a small pike in there if it isn't too aggressive to rays, although I'd really like a geo for eating leftover ray food in the sand. Of course it'd have to be big enough to not be eaten by a 12'' or so ray.

Open to any other suggestions. Not going to get very much aside from the rays for this. Maybe 1 fish for the top and 1-2 sand-eaters.

First I would suggest a bigger tank. That foot print is good for a single ray not multiple. The massive Bio load the rays alone would produce will pollute and eventually poison them to death. You would be doing water changes daily. When I had my orbignyi in a 55 qt I had to do daily changes just to keep the water parameters perfect.

Ben..you will be ok probably. filter the ish out of that thing. yourwater volume is pushing 100. i was thining of getting a pair myself now i can wait for your pups! Red head tapasos is a good med geo but I would skip the pike.

post some pics when you get them!

Jay might be right. How many are you getting?

I tried geos with a smaller hybrid and geo was way to big to be eaten but ray beat geo within an inch of it's life so be careful. Ray is on the aggressive side

2. And I'm a filtration nut. There will be wet/dry, normal sump, a ton of pothos, and UV. The pump on the sump will be one of the 2 i used to use on my 220, so between that and the can i expect approx 15-20x turnover/hr. Not to mention 75% weekly wc. Trust me, params will be flawless.

Ok sounds like you got it down packed. Maybe you should add some tinfoil barbs. I've heard they eat ray poop.

I kept some red head tapajos and some small altifrons together and the female tapajo and most altifrons were killed. Im not sure of the culprit but i assumed the male tapajo. The reason i got these two is bc they were recommended as a nonaggressive fish to go with rays so i was surprised by their aggressive behavior. I did have a small african aro in the tank as well but i still think it was one of the geos...could be wrong though. Not sure if this helps any but wanted to share.

Anything you keep with rays is potential food. Ide go with adult Geos if your going to try them. I just watched my 8" disked retic tonight eat a 3"+ feeder goldfish without hesitation. ime pikes are Extremely intelligent and stand a good chance with rays as long as they don't decide to beat on the ray.

Idk something is fishy Rapps is saying they Max at 12" and up here thier profile says 24"+(?). I believe someone has the wrong info. The question is who.
