My pond is 8'x6' so I have plenty of space, but I was wanting to put some sort of container in there [in the corner] for smaller fish so they can share the same water. Like one of these...

and just drill tiny holes towards the top of it to get some water exchange through it. I plan on putting some smaller koi and sturgeon in the rubbermaid. I could even cover it with some chicken wire so nothing from the rest of the pond jumps in on accident.

I was thinking of making a T in my plumbing and hooking a small line up to it and putting it next to the pond, but that's so much more work. Build a stand, bulkheads, more pvc...

And that stock tank has a beast footprint for smaller fish.

So what'r your thoughts? Doable, right? Just wondering how I can keep it semi higher then the pond water level. Somehow with the 2x6's on the rim of the pond.

Hmmm...

Good idea

Alright, hatched an idea staring at my pond this morning. I'm going to put a 250 gph powerhead into the reserve water at the bottom of my sump, and pump that to a separate stock tank via 5/8" pvc tubing. Then, I'll probably just need one bulkhead and let the water drain back into the pond. Money : )

it's called a refugia in Ecology. It'll work for a while- the littler fish will occasionally leave the enclosure, and some will live and others.... well.If the population in the refugia is breeding this attrition won't be an issue.
I've used something similar in my big aquarium with swordtails, snails & plants. It works fine, but it's ugly so the wife eventually complains and I cross my fingers & pull it out... and I have little fish, plants & snails for a couple of weeks, then I don't.

Basically a good idea, but forget sturgeon. They grow too big for your big pond, let alone a rubbermaid :)
