well I just got a new house, with a garage for the first time and on the side of the garage is a cut out in the wall, my guess is its for a freezer and trash can. but the area is 72" by 36". So I was thinking of building a frame out of 4x4s? or 2x4"s and then putting another 2x4 every 10-16" laterally. then a 1/2" piece of ply to layer the inside and just drop in a pond liner...... i have about 2kGPH for pumps. so how tall can I safely go with the tank? how high can I safely go with my framing design. here is a small picture of my idea. the black is plywood inside the frame which is the brown parts. just to give even support for the pond liner.

Do you have a pic. of the cut out?

Is it more like a bump out in the corner?

If you use 3/4" Ply and frame it out of 2x4 or 2x6's, you should be able to go 4' tall. I say 4' sine the plywood would not need to be ripped then. It depends if the cut out is actually that and not an alcove. If the cut out has a lower ceiling, the height would be determined by how easy it is to do maintenace w/o breaking your back.

the cutout does not have a lower ceiling. so can i safely frame it with 2x4s?

imo it isnt how high you can go it should be how high you WANT to go then you design something strong enough to hold whatever depth you decide to make it. i will never do anything above 3' makes it too difficult to do anything with and too difficult to view. unless you are going to scrap the pond liner portion and do a plywood TANK instead of plywood pond, and paint the inside and seal in some viewing windows in the side facing out. then i would go up to say 5'.

yea i dont have the money for a viewing window right now, im an E3 in the military. pay is low. I was wanting to make the pond about 40" tall and only fill it to about 35"

well this pond has to come together quickly. I just got a 50g tank off craigslist and when it was delivered the guy had a 10-12" alligator gar

you can ship the gator gar to me, ill take him and pay for shipping if you dont want it.

Well I would like to keep him. Just trying to get the pond built up ASAP.

so i assume you're still going with the same heights? what will you be stocking the pond with?

what thickness of ply have you decided on?

i am planning on doing this at some stage and am thinking of using maybe a blue liner with sand on the bottom to make the fish easier to veiw...

I am going with 40" tall but will be filled to around 32-34" stocking will be my gar, two oscars, a silver aro or two and maybe a few pbass
