I think monitors are pretty interesting lizards but I doubt I'll ever have the resources to keep a large one. Are there any smaller ones that don't need a huge cage and have good personalities?
#1 recommended monitor by many people. They cost a little more up front, but they stay relatively small and end up costing much less because of their husbandry requirements. The are active, bold, and will actually tolerate your presence. Most dwarf monitors remain very skittish.
They come in two varieties, red ackies (V. acanthurus) and yellow ackies (V. acanthurus brachyurus). Red are a little more expensive, but that doesn't mean they're better. It is also illegal to import them(or maybe illegal to export them from Oz), so they are all guaranteed CBB, unlike most monitors.
