small, MONSTER, fish for a relatively unexperienced keeper?

what are some suggestions for a small fish i could keep. i want to keep it in something under 30 gals. i want it to look like it kill you if it wanted too. and it needs to be something a starter keeper could keep. my dad is VERY experienced with aquariums so he could help alot. and i would prefere it be freshwater because arent those easier to care for???

Thalassophryne amazonica might be around $40. Leaf fish might be a bit less. Firemouths are often free.

Giant betta splendens or betta macrostoma! Shall we roll on?
