I have a 55g with some raphael catfish and a lesser siren. im looking for some small peaceful and hardy cichlids for some activity but they have to be big enough (3") not to get eaten later by the siren.

Cleithracara maronii?

festiviums?

any others? im not experiences with SA cichids, ive always has africans

Small species from the Geophagus Cichla family.:). Dwarf Ram Cichlids are pretty much peaceful.

Mesonauta (festivums) probably get too large for a 55. Males grow large and are active.

Keyholes would work. They can be a bit shy. Mine hid a lot unless they had other outgoing cichlids as tankmates.

Rainbows (A. a multispinosus) would be good, though they are Central American.

Bolivian rams (M. altispinosus) are larger and hardier than blue rams so they'd be an option.

Also Laetacara species ... curviceps, dorsigera, or aragiaiae ... they tend to be more outgoing than keyholes but still big enough not to get eaten like blue rams would.

well if you're looking for SA because of the type of water, you could likely get away with kribensis because they're needs closer match american cichlids since they're from the rivers of africa not the lakes. they get decent enough size and they'vegot cool little perpersonalities

i think HRP grow to a smaller max size than regular convicts.sajicas or cutteri could work too

German blue rams and bolivian rams! I have 6 german blues. 2 apistogramma cacatuoides and an angelfish in a 29 right now. All are still only 1-2 inches. Will be going in a 55 gallon soon! They mix well together! Highly recommended the ram species.

Or a couple firemouth. They are actually quite peaceful for a south american. And they dont get to big 6 inches. Mine is 4 1/2 inches and gets bullied by my 2 1/2 inch wild caught green terrors and my 3 inch jack dempsey. So they could go good in a 55.
