This morning I noticed that in my gar tank, my Cuban Gar, and my pink Tilapia had small pinkish things stuck to their pelvic fin, back, and lip, respectively - maybe 1/8 inch and just anchored onto the fin / back / lip. I have removed them, but could not see them afterwards.

First, any idea what they are? They didn't really have a distinct shape, but were pink-ish.

Second - where the heck did they come from? This tank ONLY gets Hikari, and Ken's pellets. No meat that they could have come from. Any ideas ? About a month ago, I put 2 dead shiners in from the bait shop - which could probably be the source, but nothing for the past month since - what do you guys think?

At any rate - should I treat the tank, or just watch for more? If I should treat the tank, what should I treat with? It is a 75 gallon tank, unheated.

Thanks!

Thanks! It's too early to tell - since there have only been 3 actual "things" - but I did just find a black anchorworm - in the same tank - no idea why these are all popping up today, all at once, all of a sudden. Very odd.

Do a very large water change while vacuming the substrate. Clean the filter out also.

The 1st thing that came to my mind, was that they were juvie anchor worms. Especially after you mentioned the minnow from the bait shop. But you need to get an ID from someone who knows that has seen them, a store specializing in koi should know, or compare them to pics on the net. Treating for an unknown, is like treating a broken leg with an antihistamine.
If they are anchor worms, they are not worms at all, but crustaceans, and you would need an anti crustacean treatment.

Anchor worm does seem to fit. My silver aro had a few attached to him when i got him. I didnt notice them till I got him in my tank. I treated him with API general cure it took care of them pretty fast.
