Today i did a water change in my red tails grow out tank. and i noticed on one side it seems like he has or is getting gill curl. what i got from yahoo answers was that its from poor water conditions / lack of air. my set up is a 40 gal tank. with a heater. and a penguin 200 bio wheel. 1 air strip and 1 air stone. After i did a water change i went out and bought a aquaclear 50 filter to add on. i also added a little aquarium salt (1 tsp = 5 gallons i put 2 wasnt sure to put the amount for 40 gals). what else should i try doing and how long does it usually take for it to go away if it does. thanks. when my friend gets home later ill try posting up the results of the water after everything settles down.

Just keep water clean. If you can, try and do water changes every other day. Don't know how much you feed the little guy or how big he is, but just keep the water clean.

How long is the RTC compared to how wide the tank is?

i got him when he was about 2-3" now hes about 6" im guessing. he used to just hide in this cave i had so i would just keep about 20 feeder roseys in there. he would go through those in about a week and a half - 2 weeks. But now he outgrew that cave and is just in a bare tank with some feeders. when i first got him i would aim to do a water change every other week 2 weeks at most. ill try the every other day thing in a day or two. should this be like 25-30% or a little more?

a little less than half the width. after he finishes his current feeders hes getting moved into a 120. then when i finish my filter for the pond out back thats his new home. thats roughly 1500 gal.

Edit: i forgot to add every couple of days he's fed frozen krill and blood worms.
