Hey, I'm coming onto here to try to look for some species of small African cichlids for a project I'm trying to forfill. I'm trying to construct an African stream/river tank riparium biotope. I've already come to the conclusion I'm probably going to have to cheat with the plants themselves but I would like to try to keep the animal life a little more ecologically correct.

Right now the main animal for the display is an adult female African side necked turtle, before anyone freaks she is fish friendly. Only time she gets aggressive is if they go after her food, other thank that as long as the fish a fast and have room to avoid the turtle she doesn't bother with them. She is full grown at around 6inches so she is not a large messy turtle.

I tried looking at the African lake cichlids but came to the conclusion that the water chemistry the need would not be to good for the turtle or plants. Other than jewel cichlids though I don't know of other small non-rift valley lake cichlids from africa or Madagascar.

If anyone has an idea for species I could try it would be greatly appreciated. The main requirements are they have to be smaller, no Oscar size big boys, they need a ph that's around neutral to slightly acidic, they have to be quick, and not extremely territorial.

I'm not sure how large the setup will be let but it is going to be atleast 20gallons. Thanks for the help.
