There was this small spider just crawling around on my sand. Have no idea where it came from but I pulled it out and squashed the little bugger.

Anybody know what this is?

Well, the only spider that we currently know of that can live underwater is the Diving Bell Spider (very cool, check it out!!). So my guess would be that it either was not a spider (not doubting you, but still an option) or that it fell into the water and as it was not actually live when you saw it, just floating in the current. If it was alive then it was probably drowning when you pulled it out.

The reincarnation of your great great grandfather come to look after you and your tank. You're screwed now.

Lol I shouldn't laugh at these posts. Interesting pic tho, maybe some kind of water louse...? If I had an underwater spider thing there's no way I'd have touched it haha

I once found what looked EXACTLY like and underwater millipede crawling on my substrate. It even walked right over one of my fish. I squished it, but always wondered what it was.

Well it was definitely an arachnid of some sort when i pulled him out I looked at him closely. Definitely 8 legs. But it may well been drowning while down there lol. Still an odd find

You're close. It's a water mite. Can't tell which species. There are about a dozen species in PA. The mite was most likely brought in by a mosquito since nearly all mosquito species in the PA area are carriers of mites of one species or another.
