Small tank filtration question

i'm wondering if i can setup a 2.5-5gal quarantine or breeder tank with no filter, but use seachem matrix as substrate (i have a bunch left over from my other tank) and put a pothos plant in the tank. I would use an airstone to circulate the water.

what do you guys think?

i should have mentioned, it will be freshwater, other than that i don't really know yet... as a quarantine tank, it would be anything i need to eject from my main tank (75gal community tank)... as a breeder tank, my first thought was something easy, like 10 cherry shrimp.

in example, i had a prawn in my 75gal tank that was a little too aggressive for my crayfish (i have 3 crayfish that are all super-mellow and live comfortably together)... luckily i had just setup my 30gal tank, so i tossed him in there for now.
