It's been too long since I had a tank (about 10 years now).

Unfortunately, I can't put a large tank at home but am considering a small tank. However, I spend a lot of time at work and wanted to set up a small tank (5-10 gallons) and put it on my desk.

I wanted to know if there are any quality setups. I know the packages used to be pretty poor, but not sure what has changed in 10+ years.
Are tanks like this enough?

Also, what fish other than bettas could live in a smaller tank?

Nano setups are the now thing when your talking about small tanks. Some use such setups for small exotic freshwater shrimp, their are a few species of small fish species. I suggest typing nano setups in the search bar and see what others have done.

Any setup is "enough" depending on what and how many fish you want. You won't want to put any monsters in that tank unless it's pea puffers or something. You could do a pair of convict cichlids in a 20 or so.

I bought a little eight gallon with a built in sump for my classroom. A few zebra danios and a bristle nose works pretty good

im gonna derail the thread a bit. what do you teach? if you don't mind me asking.

I would say it depends on what you want to keep. There are plenty of options you could keep in a tank like that.

I teach special education with an emphasis on behavior. Feeding the fish was one of my rotating jobs the students did after recess to settle them down before beginning lessons again. Water change was a "Fun Friday" activity that involved everyone to encourage cooperation

Thanks for asking and apologies to the op for the derail

Oh man. I image that takes some serious patience.
I've been doing a lot of research and preparing to go after an alternative teaching cert after I graduate in May.
