I have two small tiger shovelnose both around 4'' each. I have noticed at this length they really show no activity at all. Often just leaving food in the tank until the lights are completely off. I will never find the food the next morning. Is this common? Should I expect them to be more active as they grow? They literally spend 95% of their time sitting motionless.
Thank you

When my TSNs were that little, they just sat at the bottom and hung out just like yours. Only eating in secret. I rarely saw them move. But as they grew bigger they became more active "hunters" and searched out the food. Now they are both over 24" long and go crazy when I come to the tank. They are very active. So just give them time. And trust me, they will grow FAST!

Yeah i have one of my buddies 6-7in TSN right now and he sits in a pile of plastic plants all day. Only comes out at night to feed. Typical catfish behavior really. Be lazy, Eat when you have no competition, Go back to being lazy and the cycle just repeats. especially when they are small. I wouldnt worry.

I had a TSN a long time ago. I don't remember it being particuarly active during the day. I remember it would change positions in the tank during the day but never when I was watching.

Besides todays bad incident, my baby TSN acts just the same as you're describing yours. Mine is about 4.5"-5". During the day he'll just sit at the bottom near some driftwood or something and switch positions around the tank every so often. That's just how they are when they're young. As soon as night time falls and I turn off the lights, he gets really active and basically explores every inch of the tank. Now I just hope mine recovers so he can go back to being his healthy & peaceful self... :(

My tsn is 10" and has just starting to move about and would only eat at night till i didnt feed him for two days and then only fed him during the day way before dark. It took a few days but he then started eating when i fed him he still just sat ther after eating for a few weeks but he came around. Not saying it will work for you but you can try if your fish is healthy he will be fine for a few days with out food.
