1385261I just rvenrtly got this 3” severum and I noticed these 3 small white spots on it (1 on anal fin and 2 more on back of top fin). I’ve dealt with Ick before and he’s not showing any signs of ick eating like a pig swimming throughout the tank freely and actively. I was wondering if any of you know what these small spots could be?

Could small spots of fungus or lymphocystis. Would monitor. Keep the water clean can add or not with salt at 1tsp per g.

Can lymphocystis spread to my other fish? I don’t think I will be able to add that much salt, any other options? I will monitor the fish water is clean all parameters checking out fine currently doing weekly 50% water changes

It’s like the common cold. Can go to other fish.

Don't know the exact diagnosis, but I've had the occasional, temporary, random pimple-like spots over the years. Whatever they've been, they were practically always no big deal. Didn't seem contagious, occasionally a couple of fish would get them, but not something that spread in the tank.

Was a mod on a now defunct frontosa forum for years, people would get them from time to time, every so often someone would post and ask about them. Typically the same thing-- occasional, random and not serious. Won't guarantee yours are the same, but typically looked like your photos. Always recommended the same thing-- clean water, little salt and/or a little Melafix-- which usually took care of it. Clean water alone also worked, just a bit slower.

When I say a little Melafix-- Melafix is known for causing fast breathing, I've seen different theories as to why. I tinkered with it and found using less than the label recommended dose works just fine for most minor scuffs, the occasional minor pimple-like spot, etc., with less of the fast breathing effect (which is temporary and seems harmless enough). For me that means 1/4-1/3 dose in many cases.

Probably yours are the same thing-- unless they multiply, which would be something different.

Hey neutrino, the spots on my severum have numbered and now are on his front fins as well and more on his tail... no other fish have them so far but more are growing on the severum. help?

Ich, then? Ich can start with just a few spots, then multiply, and I've seen it start with just one or two fish before spreading-- I've even had some fish get it and others not appear to get it (or some get very few spots). Apparently, some fish fight it better than others. Looking at your photo, the spots do appear to have a salt grain look to them.

Beyond ich, it would be outside my experience. I haven't had any other potential white spot diseases.

here’s a pic. the one thing making me think it’s not ick is because he’s not showing any physical behavior of ick. still swimming lively and eating plenty
