I know what planaria are and i have had them before, and this is not it. They are about a 16th of an inch long, and about the width of a hair. They squiggle really fast, and are free swimming around the surface of the tank. What are they? Are they harmful? and if they are how can i get rid of them.

Nematodes? not seen them that long but harmless if it's them

Pics? Planaria come in different shapes and forms. They could also be detritus worms which is similar to planaria as indicators you are overfeeding your fish or the maintenance is still not enough.

I have had some similar too that have freed themselves from my substrate and began squiggling themselves to the surface. when they got to the surface, i witnessed small white flies crawl out of the larvae shell. they were about 2 hairs thick. UV sterilizer for a week or two nipped that problem in the bud quick. Havent seen em again. we had them for about a year in that tank and i think they may have been introduced by wild caught fish. they weren't harmfull but def. annoying.
